2nd Annual Baby V Wiffle Ball Tourney- July 13th, 2008-THANK YOU

The 2nd Annual Baby V Wiffle Ball Tournament THANK YOU!!!!!

When: Sunday July 13th, 2008

Where: Town of Newburgh Little League Fields

The 2nd Annual Baby V. wiffle ball tourney was a huge success! 14 teams turned out for an amazing tournament which was capped by two amazing championship games. Although the last game was cut short due to windy conditions, the result was a great day in which we raised money for a great cause. The day started off with two brackets of seven teams in a double elimination tournament.

The surprise team of the day was clearly Team Baby V. Led by the bat of Pat Legare and the ace pitching of Tim Secor team Baby V. started out 3-0 by defeating last years title game participants and 2008 3rd place winner Fat Boy Chicken Leg.  Eventually Team Baby V. gave way to the title game participants and ended up with a record of 3-2 on the day. "Buzzy" Buzzurro took both losses and ran his wiffle ball pitching record to 0-4 over the last two years. This brings us to the the teams who made it to the top three spots.

Taking 3rd place was Fat Boy Chicken Leg. Expecting to make it to the finals for the second year in a row, this powerhouse may have taken

Team Baby V. a little lightly. As you can see by the photo, hits were hard to come by this year. Six strikeout's later, a horrible home run call and a controversial game winning single by Debra Secor sent the 2007 title game participants into the consolation game. It was in the consolation game where these guys made thier mark. Taking home the 3rd place trophy and some respect, the FBCL's are expected to make a run in 2009 as well. Good job boys!

In 2nd place, Dem Boys from Monroe Connecticut went into the championship game undefeated. Sporting a 4-0 record on the day, they ran into the wiffle ball buzz saw known as Show No Mercer. The youngsters only needed one victory to take home the big trophy and the glory. The SNM jumped out to a 21-3 lead late in the game only to see it disappear on multiple grand slams by the young pitching phenom from Monroe. Before SNM knew what hit them, they were down 25-21 and looking at the 2nd place trophy. Dem boys walked the bases loaded and eventually walked in a few runs as the winds picked up and thier ace pitcher lost his control. Still down by one run, the Bases were loaded with two outs and big Gasper at the plate. The count was full and the payoff pitch was delivered. STRIKE THREE!!! as Gasper fails to check his swing. WAIT, the home plate umpire calls it ball four and the tying run comes home. Another walk seals the game one victory for SNM.

In game two of the double elimination tournament, the wind was a major factor. Due to the strong gusty wind conditions, the game was shortened from a five inning game to a three inning game. Neither pitcher could find the strike zone and the batters were not lifting their bats off their shoulders. After many walks, it was determined the game would be cut short and Show No Mercer would be granted the championship trophy. They led the game by 10 runs at this point and it made no sense to continue due to the wind conditions. The Boys from Connecticut gracefully took the loss and vowed to come back next year and win the whole thing......well, at least we hope they come back in 2009. The bottom line is we all had a great time and everyone was fantastic.

Here are your top winners. Show No Mercer, Dem Boys and Fat Boy Chicken Leg.
